Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one separate occasion and include:

identifying assistance measures to meet needs of disaster-affected individuals and communities

preparing referrals

talking to disaster-affected individuals to obtain and record relevant information about them and their needs

working as part of a team with communities and people from a range of cultural backgrounds and following instructions in accordance with recovery arrangements

working collaboratively and sensitively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

administrative tasks relating to support services

community-centred approaches

definitions of disaster and recovery

disaster assistance services, processes and practices

effective communication principles

principles of cross-cultural communication

recovery stakeholders

recovery environments

role of psychological first aid in disaster recovery and when to refer disaster-affected people to mental health practitioners

services provided by outreach, evacuation centres, relief or recovery centres

support services available for disaster-affected individuals and communities.
